âWhy are you walking like youâve shit yourself?â Shaun asked in greeting as Devlin approached him. He drew the shotgun from the padded slip on his saddle as he spoke, discouraging Devlin from making any response at all.
He did slow down, removing the odd waddle from his gait as if embarrassed by it, and sneered at the man on horseback in front of him. He sniffed the air theatrically, looking left and right as he frowned.
âWhereâs that bitch? Itâs unlike you to do anything without her telling youââ
The shotgun, held with a derisively casual manner in just one hand, lowered to point directly at him.
âCall my wife names again.â
The words were simple, carrying no threat, just leaving the promise of consequences in the air for Devlin to use his imagination. He said nothing, and the shotgun lifted to point into the air again.
âDidnât think so,â Shaun said, feeling a little shocked at how easily he had threatened to kill a man horribly, at point blank range, over calling Abbie a bitch.
As far as insults went, it was hardly strong enough to twitch the needle, and Shaun had definitely called her far worse things, but coming from his mouthâ¦
âWalk,â he said, jerking his head back out of the village and turning Sugarâs head with the reins.
Devlin didnât move. Shaun turned back and gave him a look, but the man even went so far as to put his hands on his hips. Shaun sighed, slipping the shotgun back into the slip and producing a short length of brightly coloured climbing rope.
âWalk or be dragged,â he said, leaning forward to pat the horseâs neck reassuringly. âShe can take your weight, donât worry.â
Devlin drew himself up and walked, imagining himself stepping closer to his execution with each footfall and assuring himself that he would not go screaming. He would find a way out of this, and he would get his revenge on them if it was the lastâ
âFaster, dickhead,â Shaun snapped, shoving him in the back with a boot that he slipped effortlessly back into the stirrup.
Devlin staggered, regaining his feet with decorum to proceed faster than he had before.
